The VIA® Institute on Character was established as a non-profit organization in 2001. Our mission is to advance both the science and the practice of character. We aim to fill the world with greater virtue—i.e. more wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. We do this by offering the VIA Survey, free of charge, across the globe. Since our inception, the VIA Survey has been taken by over 1.3 million people in 193 countries and 17 languages. We’re glad to say, we’re making progress. In fact, interest in character strengths is at an all-time high. People are using strengths to improve their personal lives and to build better workplaces, schools and teams. To support both individuals and professionals interested in incorporating strengths into their lives and their work, we have created two sister sites: VIAPros.org and VIAMe.org. VIAPros.org is a site dedicated to supporting professionals, including coaches, therapists, educators, managers, consultants, health care professionals and more, by offering in-depth reports, specialized training, free speaker series, and resources such as videos, articles, and best practices.
VIAMe.org is for those interested learning about their own character strengths and how to apply them to their personal pursuits and relationships to achieve greater life satisfaction, social good, and actualization of potential. At VIAMe.org individuals can access the VIA Survey or VIA Youth Survey as well as the VIA Me! Pathways Report, VIA Youth Decoder Report and others resources designed to help individuals build their best lives.
Last, but not least, VIA works with researchers around the world to advance the science of character strengths. If you are a researcher interested in using the VIA Survey in your research, please contact us.
