Summary: Proof Positive helps autistic individuals live their best lives by fundamentally changing treatment from a deficit model to one that embraces well-being and Character Strengths.

When Katie Curran, MAPP set out to create Proof Positive, she had one goal in mind: to shift the narrative for autistic individuals from what’s wrong to what’s strong. Drawing from her background in behavioral science and positive psychology, she built a program that helps educators, clinicians, and families use character strengths to empower rather than 'fix' — and in doing so, changed the way autism support looks and feels.

A Moment That Sparked a Movement Within the Autism Community

The inspiration came thousands of miles away — in a classroom in Tanzania. “When I went to help support a new autism classroom in the country, I expected to see the worst behaviors,” Katie recalls. “Instead, I was struck by the joy in every child. They didn’t know how to ‘fix’ them, so they just celebrated what was right. That moment changed everything for me.”

Back in the U.S., she began to see what was missing. “We have great interventions, but I was still seeing kids struggle. What was missing was helping them live meaningful, joyful lives.” This realization became the foundation for Proof Positive — a program that integrates clinical expertise in autism intervention with the science of positive psychology, including character strengths to foster well-being, learning, and authentic growth of the autism community.

From Deficits to Character Strengths

Katie’s approach challenges the long-standing deficit-based model that dominates special education and therapy. “For neurotypical kids, we build on their interests — whatever they’re good at, they spend more time doing. For autistic kids, we do the opposite. We spend all day on their deficits. If we did that to any child, they’d be frustrated too.”

Proof Positive flips the script. By helping educators and clinicians identify and cultivate character strengths like curiosity, perseverance, and kindness, children begin to flourish. Families and teachers do, too. “When you shine a light on strengths, everything gets better. Relationships improve, outcomes improve, people feel happier — and happier people perform better. It’s that simple.”

Creating Real Change at Easterseals

The program’s impact can be seen across clinics nationwide, including at Easterseals Southern California, part of Proof Positive’s Autism Wellbeing Alliance. As Vice President of Therapy Services, Jessica Miller has championed the integration of character strengths into everyday clinical practice. Under her leadership, sessions begin with strength spotting — reframing the conversation from deficits to possibilities.“We started by noticing the bravery it took for parents to ask for help, the hope they carried walking through the door. They wept, because no one had asked them what was right with their child in a long time. That simple shift changes everything.”

This strengths-based approach comes to life through Easterseals’ culture. During Autism Acceptance Month, they created “cape-ABILITY City,” a superhero-themed strengths experience where families named their child’s “superpower for the world” and children proudly wore capes displaying their strengths. One participant even signed “more” for the first time — showing how strengths-based environment can open doors to confidence and communication.

As part of the Autism Wellbeing Alliance, Easterseals continues to model how strengths-based practice can change the tone of therapy, empower families, and build cultures of possibility.

This same approach is used in the schools Proof Positive partners with, where students have the opportunity to contribute to their Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings by presenting their strengths. As founder Katie explains, “Even nonverbal kids create posters to share theirs. It’s a small shift, but it transforms the tone of the entire meeting.”

Proof Positive doesn’t just serve individuals — it’s designed to transform systems. “We wanted to take the science of positive psychology to scale. Our goal was to find interventions that do no harm — things like gratitude, time in nature, and character strengths. These are accessible, universal, and powerful starting points.” By training educators, clinicians, and organizations to use VIA’s character strengths framework, Proof Positive creates ripple effects of well-being and belonging across entire communities.

The Character Strengths Difference

At the heart of this work is authenticity — helping people reconnect to what makes them feel alive. Katie puts it this way: “When you’re authentically operating from your signature strengths, you feel energized and engaged. And when you can’t, it drains you. People often ask, ‘Why don’t I feel good?’ and the answer is usually because they’re not living into their strengths.” Signature strengths are your highest-ranked character strengths — the ones that feel most natural, energizing, and authentic to you. Through this strengths-based lens, Proof Positive empowers people — from children to professionals — to see themselves not as problems to solve, but as possibilities to grow.

Impact

  • Providing access to free resources for any interested member of the autism community
  • More than 6500 people have participated in live training sessions with Proof Positive
  • More than 25,000 digital resources were utilized by the autism community in 2025
  • Working directly with nine pilot sites throughout the country

Looking Ahead

Proof Positive continues to expand its partnerships, helping schools, clinics, and community organizations around the United States adopt strengths-based frameworks that honor neurodiversity and nurture human potential. “People are hungry to know what’s right with them,” Katie says. “That’s the beauty of this work — it invites people to lean in, not pull away.”
