Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice (MBSP) is a new program that can be applied to groups or individuals in a variety of settings – counseling, coaching, education, healthcare, or business. MBSP brings together the latest science of mindfulness and character strengths into a practical program to help people flourish. This 8-week program is grounded in a blending of experiential exercises, mindful living meditations, and dyad/group discussions.
The practice of mindfulness can help people improve their skill of strengths-spotting, facilitate a grounded strengths-based approach, break through strengths blindness, and find the “golden mean of strengths” (i.e., strengths expression that balances overuse and underuse and is sensitive to context). Character strengths, in turn, can be used to overcome common obstacles that emerge when developing mindfulness and serve to “supercharge” both mindful living and formal mindfulness meditation.
MBSP is been piloted in several countries. This course will be led by Dr. Ryan Niemiec, the creator of MBSP and author of Mindfulness and Character Strengths: A Practical Guide to Flourishing.
Emphasis: “Practice what you preach.” This is a sacred motto for those who are interested in teaching mindfulness or running mindfulness groups. It is also the motto VIA recommends to practitioners working with their clients’ character strengths. One must experience and have one’s own practice of mindfulness and strengths before attempting to teach mindfulness/strengths to others. This is especially true for teachers, managers, coaches, and counselors.
Due to the interaction and rigor of this course, it is important that participants attend all 8 sessions live. If you know of a conflict during one of the 8 sessions, it is suggested you wait to join a future round of MBSP. For those that experience sudden or emergent conflicts that arise, the session recording will be provided (note that breakout discussions are not recorded). We will provide the recording up to a maximum of two times for missed sessions.
