A Simple Tip For Spreading Love

This month on our VIA Facebook and Twitter pages we are focusing on the character strength of love. Love is about being close to other people and having a genuine interest in their well-being and happiness. You use this strength when you give your child a tender hug after school, empathize with your sibling about a struggle, or mindfully listen to your partner talk about their work day. Sure, it’s easy to see how this strength is exercised with friends and family, but what about expressing love at work?

Should you show your co-workers TLC? The answer: Absolutely!

You spend a lot of time with your colleagues, so it’s important that you cultivate and nurture these relationships just as you would with your spouse or children. After all, positive relationships are one of the most important factors contributing to your happiness, so investing more time in improving these connections can have a profound impact on your well-being.

Sign in to your VIA account to discover where love falls in your Strengths Profile and then read about an easy (and appropriate!) way to put this strength to work, at work.

Use Another One Of Your Character Strengths

One simple way to show more love to your colleagues is by exercising your strength of curiosity. Ask questions! Make a conscious effort each week to converse with your co-workers on a personal level. Ask them about their weekend or the latest project they are working on. Find out about their kids and their hobbies outside of the office. As they are talking, resist the temptation to talk about yourself, give them your undivided attention and show an authentic interest in what they are saying. As you are listening, practice strengths-spotting for the character strengths they reveal in their stories.

“Wow, Mary, the project you are working on sounds complicated! You’ve been so prudent and perseverant to stay on task and meet each deadline so far.”

“John, it sounds like you had a fun weekend with your family. You were so creative to make that obstacle course for your kids. I'm sure they loved it!”

Getting to know your co-workers on a deeper level helps you form trusting, supportive relationships and a more enjoyable work envirnonment. As you show compassion and interest in your colleagues’ lives you'll be infusing more love into your workplace. Get started now… get asking!
